With Summer in full swing, it can be rather brutal trying to endure the blistering heat! As you’ve probably noticed, the Treasure Valley is experiencing some of the hottest temperatures since the dog days… or 2007. Luckily for you, our team at DJW Property Management has a few tips and tricks to help you relax and keep cool during the hottest time of the year!

Using Blinds to Keep Out The Sun

Natural lighting is healthy for us, but when the sun is beating through the windows, it also tends to heat your home quite a bit. Air conditioning is definitely the clear go-to, but it can also be the most expensive option out there. By using sun concealers like curtains, interior blinds, and reflective blinds, not only does it block out the sun, but it can reduce the heat gain in your rental up to 40%! If the cheaper option feels like the route you want to take, then these few options are a great way to try and beat the heat.

Change and Clean Your AC Filter

Congratulations, you have an air conditioning unit… not a lot of people have this luxury! Does it feel like your AC still isn’t keeping your rental as cool as you’d like though? Well the issue could easily be tied to your AC’s air filter. A dirty filter can cause issues with the air conditioner stopping and going, inconsistent airflow, and can waste energy. Changing it yourself can also be a task itself, especially when you’ve never changed the filter before. Luckily there are many HVAC guides that have an easy step-by-step guide to help you get through the process! Filters can easily be purchased as well, so if you don’t want to deal with the manual labor of it all, there’s more than one option to get your AC back to running properly!

Energy-Efficient Bulbs

You must be thinking “how can my light bulbs contribute to the heat in here”? Well, incandescent bulbs can actually lead to 4-5 times the amount of heat given off compared to eco-friendly bulbs. In fact, these energy efficient bulbs have multiple benefits to them:

  • Eco-friendly bulbs are cheaper
  • The bulbs can last up to three times longer than traditional bulbs
  • They produce less heat and energy
  • The durability of eco-friendly bulbs allows them to withstand harsh weather

With summer being here, DJW Property Management wants you and your new or existing rental to feel as cool as possible! So dump those incandescent bulbs and invest in a bulb that keeps your apartment cool and your energy bill cheaper… killing two birds with one stone!

Fans

If an AC unit stretches the budget, looking towards other routes such as a pedestal fan could be in the ballpark. Fans require incredibly less energy than air conditioning and are a great way to keep your rental occupied with a nice cross breeze. Some fans are able to rotate on their base, resulting in an equally distributed flow of air. However, like AC filters, make sure to keep an eye on the amount of dust that the fans start collecting! The only thing worse than having a malfunctioning fan is one that creates a dust bowl in the process.

Turning Off Lights and Electronics

One of the easier ways to cool down your rental is to turn off electronics and lights within your rental. Some devices like computers, phones, and TVs are able to generate a good amount of heat while running… all while stacking up the energy bill. Lights play a key factor in the amount of heat generated in your rental. By turning off the lights that are not in use, or by purchasing motion sensor lights, you could be helping yourself beat the heat all while saving some extra cash in the process!

With the Treasure Valley reaching alarming temperatures, it’s imperative to keep your rental as cool as possible. At DJW Property Management we understand the need to try and kick the heat to the curb, which is why the tips and tricks above might give you the upper hand against the sun!
